Wombat Commits to Walking with First Peoples on the Journey towards Treaty

Feburary, 2025

Wombat Housing Support Services is proud to announce our commitment to walking alongside the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria on the journey to Treaty.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi‑Wurrung, Bunurong and Wadawurrung peoples as the Traditional Owners of the lands where we work, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded.

As a homelessness support service, we see firsthand the disproportionate impact of housing insecurity on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, shaped by generations of systemic injustice. We believe it is our collective responsibility to support change, listen deeply, and contribute to a more just future.

Through this pledge, Wombat affirms our support for self‑determination and commits to learning, visibility and action — including educating our staff, strengthening cultural understanding, and amplifying the journey to Treaty across our organisation and community.

The past cannot be changed, but we can choose how we move forward. Wombat is committed to walking together with First Peoples towards truth, healing and justice.
